10 Tips to Make Robots?

10 Tips to Make Robots?   by Anna Fowler

Learning and Doing are two different things. It is important to learn and not just do. Making a robot is fun, but it must be thought through. RoboGalaxy provide online robotics education and help you learn from "What is a robot" to "designing and programming robots". These learning can be taken forward to create robots may on kits like LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, VEX, BIOLOID, etc

We bring your tips to make robots by taking an example of robotics projects of a mobile autonomous robot with ball dispensing capabilities on the move. This can be a fun robotics project, and it was a challenge in WRO (World Robot Olympiad) 2012. Here are the tips to make robots -

1. A good starting place for any design is by making a rough sketch of what you want your design to look like. The act of giving that idea in our head a definitive form helps us to more clearly understand the design.

2. Once you have a rough sketch of the robot you wish to build; label it. This is most important as it will help you understand where all the different components we discussed earlier go in your design.

3. Once you have with you, your labeled sketch start building a rough "proof of concept" model in the following order

4. Start from the bottom up, the chassis of your robot will be responsible for holding all the various components together so it's a good idea to start by making a chassis for your robot. Add motors and your chosen type of wheels/treads to this chassis. Remember that at this time you should not be looking to finalize your design and to lock everything down, instead it is better to keep things simple and easily modifiable so that you can affect correction easily.

5. Once you have your chassis ready, test it out by making it move forward and performing a couple of turns. This test will help you get a feel for how the robot will move, make any changes necessary to improve your design at this point. Try laying out some obstacles in the way of your robot and see how it tackles them. Note down your observations and improve your design.

6. Once you have a chassis design that works as it should then its time to proceed onto the next component; the ball dispensing mechanism.

7. As before, start by drawing a rough sketch of your intended design. Next build a rough model of the ball dispenser on top of the chassis you built in the last step. At this point it is necessary to build the complete mechanism capable of holding all 12 balls, just enough to test the design concept.

8. Load a few balls into your model and test it to see if can dispense that balls reliably every time, tweak your design as required.

9. Next add a downward facing color sensor to your chassis and write a simple program that displays the detected color on the NXT's display. This will help you test the reliability of your color sensor.

10. Place your robot on test surfaces of the different colors that your robot needs to detect on the arena (white, green, yellow, red, blue). Check and see if the detected color is indeed the color of the surface. Repeat this test in a brightly lit room and in a dimly lit room, this test ensures that your sensor doesn't have problems working in various lighting conditions and performs reliably.
